care across four locations
We offer comprehensive oncology services across the Free State and have clinics in Bloemfontein, Welkom, Kroonstad and Bethlehem.
Although radiation only takes place in Bloemfontein, chemotherapy and follow ups can take place at all 4 locations. We can refer patients for radiology and pathology in any of our locations.
Chemotherapy
Chemotherapy is cancer treatment that uses powerful medications to kill or inhibit the growth of cancer cells. It can be administered intravenously, orally or through other methods, depending on the specific type of cancer and the patient’s needs.
Chemotherapy aims to shrink tumors, prevent cancer from spreading and improve overall survival rates. While it can be effective, it may also cause side effects as it affects both cancerous and healthy cells. Oncologists tailor chemotherapy regimens to each patient to maximize effectiveness and minimize adverse effects.
Radiation
Radiation therapy is a cancer treatment that uses high energy radiation to target and destroy cancer cells. It works by damaging the DNA of these cells, which inhibits their ability to divide and grow. Radiation can be delivered externally through a machine or internally via radioactive sources placed near the tumor.
This therapy is often used alone or in conjunction with surgery and chemotherapy, depending on the type and stage of the cancer. While effective in treating many cancers, radiation may also cause side effects, which are managed by the oncology team to ensure patient comfort and wellbeing.
Hormonal Therapy
Hormonal therapy is a treatment used for certain cancers that rely on hormones to grow, such as prostate and breast cancer. It works by blocking the body’s natural hormones or lowering their levels to slow or stop cancer cell growth. This therapy can be administered through tablets or injections.
Hormonal therapy is often used in combination with other treatments like surgery or chemotherapy and can help improve survival rates and reduce the risk of cancer recurrence. Patients are closely monitored for side effects and treatment plans are tailored for individual needs.
Targeted Therapies
Targeted therapies are cancer treatments designed to specifically attack cancer cells based on the individual characteristics of a patient’s tumor. These therapies use genetic, molecular, and cellular information to identify unique features of cancer, allowing for more effective and precise treatment.
By targeting specific pathways or mutations, tailored therapies can minimize damage to healthy cells and improve outcomes. This approach is increasingly being integrated into cancer care, enhancing the ability to customize treatment plans and optimize patient responses.
